Fats, oils and grease are common issues when dealing with everyday life. A good example to this statement is the human body. If the person eats a lot of fatty, salty, and sweet foods, the kidneys shut down, the liver gets tired, and the cardiovascular system malfunction. Medical conditions like diabetes, coronary heart disease, and fatty liver will all be experienced. If the individual works more than rests, the body experiences breakdown. Stress overpowers the organ systems and the individual gets sick. The human body craves for balance. To restore the balance, a positive change in lifestyle should be done. There should be right amounts of sleep, activity, and nutrients to maintain the normal system functions. Reduction of fats, oils and grease in a person diet would help in some ones overall health. Just like a person, Government housing has similar problems. But how can FOG(fats, oils, grease) effect a house? More importantly how can we accomplish Government housing grease reduction?
The same principle applies to everything else even in appliances or components of a structure. A certain establishment or home should be constructed to withstand any amount of rain, heat, or wind. These are natural elements that come and go. But still, excessive heat, rain, or wind could still destroy structures when the materials are not right or of the structure is not well-maintained. In government housing projects, the grease trap is a very important component. Because of the kitchens used everyday, the FOG (fats, oils, grease) levels dramatically increase, often resulting in FOG overflow. When there is FOG overflow, the untreated effluent gets laced with grease materials, which harden and adhere to the inner walls of the sewer pipes. The accumulated, hardened FOG then blocks the normal flow of the wastewater that’s supposed to enter the wastewater treatment facility. The effluent then backs up into the government housing project site. The hazardous substance gravely affects the health, sanitation, and the environment.
Too much grease in one’s diet leads to bad health problems. The same happens when there is too much grease in the grease trap. An unmaintained grease interceptor is the key to the undoing of the government housing project itself. If untreated effluent continues to overwhelm the residents, who would still want to live there? Without anyone living in government housing projects, these structures would just be white elephants. To prevent such a thing from happening, there should be vigilance in government housing grease reduction. It doesn’t have to involve decreasing the amount of fat in one’s diet, although that would be beneficial, too.
All that the residents and the management have to do is to improve their grease disposal and grease trap maintenance practices. In proper grease disposal, the residents in each apartment unit should make sure that they properly collect and dispose of the grease materials they produce when they prepare dishes and have their meals. Using leak-proof containers, they could gather the grease and throw them properly with the rest of the trash. They should also see to it that the drains in their sinks have meshes or strainers to catch the bits of food and grease that may have stuck to the dishes and utensils that they wash. This practice needs extra effort but it will help in government housing grease trap reduction. If the grease trap doesn’t have that much FOG to deal with, then there will be no FOG overflow to worry about. Large fines and lawsuits will be out of the picture if this continues.
Organisms that are considered indispensable in getting rid of the solid wastes and FOG in grease traps are bacteria. They have been in existence for billions of years and they never stop surviving simply because they are good at consuming what they need. When they eat the FOG and solid wastes in the grease trap, they convert them into less harmful forms, bringing about an odorless and a clean trap. Pumping out costs will be reduced when bacteria are used in government housing grease reduction. Having them around is a very practical investment especially during these economically trying times.
